The £125m Able2 project, in Heckmondwike, was intended to help disadvantaged young people into work, but has since been scaled back dramatically.

It was meant to boast a fishing lake, cafe, picnic, tables, pathways and numerous workshops.

But only the lake was completed and the future of the project was unclear, but a report to be considered by Kirklees Cabinet next week has suggested responsibility for the lake’s maintenance could be transferred to Dewsbury and District Angling Club.

And now the council could pump £50,000 into restoring the lake and work with the angling group and community groups to put the area to better use.

The report acknowledges that the original ambitions of the project are unlikely to be met.
