The new Friends of Batley Station group, set up by Labour parliamentary candidate Jo Cox and Coun Gwen Lowe (Batley West), is behind the day of action.

Mrs Cox said: “We’ve plenty to do to spruce up the station and give it a good spring clean, including clearing up, painting and putting in planters. Anyone who has a few free hours is welcome to help.”

The group is working alongside Northern Rail, which manages the station.

It follows the first official meeting of the group last month when the rail company said there had also been interest in the station shop.

Mrs Cox said the group had been inundated with support and volunteers since the first meeting.

“In addition, we’ve also got involved with an issue regarding the cobbles and had an approach about plans to install a new footbridge at the Howley Street crossing,” she said.

Volunteers should meet at the station at noon on April 25 to help with the clean up.

A meeting will be held at the Taproom on Commercial Street after the session.
