A church congregation is asking for donations in a bid to refurbish its building.

The Parish of St James in Heckmondwike is hoping to generate around £200,000, of which £50,000 has already been raised.

The church is hoping the restoration works will be of benefit to the community, with several organisations interested in using the facilities.

Amongst the ambitions for the project, which has been ongoing for four years, are the installation of new underfloor heating system, a new one level worship area, an up-to-date sound system and a new parish office.

Last year, the church raised £180,000 for a new spire.

The Rev Ian Bullock said: “This project has been over four years in development, and in addition to regular consultation with the parish, diocese, user groups and other interested parties, we have now reached the point where we are ready to begin the works.

“As the Church of England Parish for this area, we have not only a duty, but also a desire to be there for anyone and everyone who has need of us.

“St James’ has been a focal point and historical landmark in Heckmondwike for over 180 yeras. During that time we have been here to serve the community in a variety of ways, and have helped countless thousands who have needed the support of the church.”

Anyone wishing to donate should contact the Rev Ian Bullock on 01924 405881.
