Give up smoking this October

Doctors have encouraged smokers to kick the habit during October and advised that people who spend 28 days smoke-free are much more likely to stay that way.

Kirklees Council’s director of public health, Dr Judith Hooper, said: “In Kirklees 1,663 people signed up to take part in Stoptober 2013. Evidence shows that if a smoker can go 28 days without a cigarette, they are five times more likely to stay permanently smoke-free. Quitting smoking can be difficult but successfully quitting means overall people feel better, smell better and have more money in their pocket.”

Popular comedians like Paddy McGuinness and Al Murray have backed the campaign.

The challenge starts on October 1 and participants can pick up more information from their local GP, pharmacy or children’s centre.
