Golfing friends take on a marathon charity challenge

Thirteen teams of four players completed over six rounds at Hanging Heaton Golf Club to raise money for Mary’s Wish and Kirkwood Hospice.

Mary’s Wish is a charity set up to help Mary Hinde, a 17-year-old from Mirfield who suffers from cerebral palsy, buy and maintain a specialist wheelchair.

Meanwhile the Huddersfield hospice has running costs of £4.5m per year to meet.

The competition was won by the Flatt Top boys, from the Flatt Top pub in Thornhill.

Michael Scott, one of the organisers, said: “It was brilliant.

“The weather was nice and there were no hiccups.

“We started at 6am and finished at 7.30pm, which made 13 and a half hours including breaks. I think at the end it was a bit of a toll for the players but everybody enjoyed it. It was very well organised.

“We had a halfway house with food and drinks on offer which was lovely.”

The teams, made up of friends and work colleagues, paid £25 each to play, and raised further money through individual sponsorship and getting each of the nine holes sponsored.

The day was followed by a presentation evening at the Hanging Heaton club, with a buffet and raffle.

Michael said: “We raised more than £7,000. We are giving about £1,800 to Mary’s Wish, which is nearing its target, and the rest to Kirkwood Hospice.

“Thank you to Hanging Heaton Golf Club for hosting the event. We had a lovely day.
