The historic Dewsbury park was one of four in Kirklees to receive the award, which recognises excellence in the country’s green spaces.

Kirklees Cabinet member Coun Cathy Scott (Lab, Dews East) said: “This shows how hard our parks staff and local people have worked to help us achieve this great result.

“I would especially like to thanks the Friends of Crow Nest Park. Everyone should be very proud of this.”

Crow Nest Park has been the focus of considerable work in recent years to improve facilities and offer family friendly events.

Volunteers with The Friends of Crow Nest Park help maintain the grounds and turned its walled garden from a wasteland into an award-winning space.

They have also begun a project to restore the park’s lake with the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Friends member Jenifer Devlin said: “We’re absolutely delighted with the award.

“We think the park is looking even better than when we got it last year.

“The process of improvement is continual, but I think in the last few years it’s improved considerably. People are commenting on that now.

“It’s been a good year with events like Pets in the Park, which we’ll be holding again. We’ve also signed up more people to the Friends who are going to help with gardening and organising events.”
