Halloween’s not a patch on these pumpkins

THE countdown to Halloween is on, when ghosts, ghouls and wicked witches will be prowling around the streets of Spen.

Armed with masks, witches hats, broomsticks and spiders – no self-respecting trick-or treater will be without their pumpkin lantern.

Supermarkets and greengrocers have stocked up on the bright orange fruits ready for the big day, including Carlton Ives’s Blue Hills Farm Shop in Whitehall Road, Birkenshaw, which has 3,000 of them.

Mr Ives is a convert to the versatile pumpkin which, as well as making spooky lanterns, can be turned into soup – being served free in his Hay Loft Tearoom while stocks last!

And there’s also the chance to guess the weight of the pumpkin to win £50.

“I’d never tasted pumpkin soup until this week, but it’s absolutely beautiful!” he said.
