Cleckheaton traders are optimistic about 2014, as they believe their town can offer something unique to shoppers.

Penny Hudson, a member of Spenborough Chamber of Trade and owner of the Veg Shop in Northgate, said the traditional high street was not just a thing of the past, and is alive and well in Cleckheaton.

She said: “It is something we have to shout about.

“The fishmonger Spen Valley Seafoods recently moved in to town, so it now means that we have pretty much a traditional high street including butchers, bakers, jewellery shops and newsagents.

“The only thing we don’t have is a candlestick maker!

“I think when people are looking for a good quality of service they know they can get it from small traders in town centres like ours.”

Cleckheaton’s chamber of trade is one of the most active in Kirklees. It now has 86 members, and meets regularly to discuss upcoming events and ideas to get more shoppers into the town.

Cleckheaton councillor Kath Pinnock shared Penny’s optimism: “What is brilliant about Cleckheaton town centre is that it is so vibrant and has a fantastic group of traders. They are very passionate about encouraging people to shop locally – that’s really important for the future of the town.”
