A DOG groomer was on a sponsored horse trek this week to raise money for an abandoned pets’ charity.

Elaine Parr, who runs Scruffs dog grooming in Heckmondwike, was trekking 150 miles from Marsden to Malham Cove to raise cash for Animal Care Espana, which rescues dogs abandoned in Spain by British ex-pats.

She said: “My sister Angela Newsome went across to see the situation. The dogs are having to fight to survive and they are riddled with disease.

“It is appalling – the dogs are just left by the British people who move out there and end up having to come back to the UK. When things go wrong they come home and leave the dog. Sometimes the animals are caught by the government and put to sleep.

“They have no chance when they come into season and quite often the little ones are killed for food.”

Elaine was doing the trek on her 28-year-old Welsh cob Cass. To sponsor her, visit Scruffs in Oldfield Lane, Heckmondwike, or call 07922 374338.
