Household waste site closed after fire

Firefighters were called to tackle a blaze at the SITA UK Waste Transfer Station, on Weaving Lane off Thornhill Road, at 7pm last night.

The fire was restricted to the Waste Transfer Station, and did not spread to the Household Waste and Recycling Centre, but it will remain closed while Weaving Lane is closed to the public.

SITA UK runs three services from the Thornhill Lees site on behalf of Kirklees Council, the waste and recycling centre, industrial amnd commerical waste collection, and the fire-struck transfer station, which is where collected rubbish is loaded into vehicles to transfer waste to the Energy From Waste facility in Huddersfield.

A spoksperson for SITA UK said: “Although the Household Waste and Recycling Centre was not affected as the road is closed for the use of emergency vehciles, anyone wishing to recycle should visit the sites Nab Lane in Birstall or Emerald Street in Huddersfield.”

He added that the site will re-open as soon as it is safe to do so.

Rubbish collections have not been affected and household waste will be taken straight to Huddersfield.

He said: “The fire service is still on site dampening down. The cause of the fire is not yet known and we are working with the services to get back up and running as soon as possible.”
