How Dewsbury and Mirfield are celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee

COMMUNITIES in Dewsbury and Mirfield can look forward to a weekend of fun and festivities as the towns celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

SATURDAY JUNE 2

Crown making and jubilee-themed face painting. Dewsbury Market, free.

Jubilee street party. Food and drinks, performances by majorettes, and old-fashioned sports challenges for children, including egg and spoon races and three-legged races. Organised by Dewsbury Retail Forum with support from local businesses and Dewsbury Sports Centre. Market Place and Foundry Street, Dewsbury, 10am-2pm.

Schoolcroft Tenants and Resident’s Association party with Queen-themed fancy dress competition, food and drink and a ventriloquist. The TRA flat, School Avenue, Dewsbury Moor, noon-3pm.

Jubilee open day, Co-operative Childcare, Heckmondwike Road, Dewsbury Moor, 10am-2pm.

Diamond Jubilee Party. Games, fancy dress, music, puppets & lots more. Bring a picnic. St Paul’s car park, Kirkgate, Hanging Heaton, 1pm-5pm.

Jubilee coffee morning. Trinity Church, Upper Road, Batley Carr, 10am-noon.

Fun day in support of ambulance first responders with barbecue, bouncy castle and tombola. Spangled Bull, High Street, Earlsheaton, 3pm-6pm.

Jubilee celebration with displays by the BCM Stars Majorettes, inflatable three-aside football pitch, tombola, barbeque. Chickenley Community Centre, Princess Road, Chickenley, noon-4pm.

Mirfield Diamond Jubilee Fete, bring a picnic, Mirfield Showground, Huddersfield Road, Mirfield, 11.30am-4pm.

Mirfield Handmade – A Very British Jubilee Craft Fair And Party, Knowl Club, Knowl Road, Mirfield, 12.30pm-4.30pm.

60 and Counting. Children’s craft activities, Jubilee trail and display of entries to the Reporter Series Jubilee children’s art competition. Dewsbury Museum, Crow Nest Park, Heckmondwike, 1pm-4pm. Adults £2, children (five-16 years) £1, free entry for Kirklees Passport holders.

MONDAY JUNE 4

Wroe Street Tenants and Residents’ Association party with DJ, bouncy castle, free food and more. Wroe Street car park, Dewsbury Moor, 11.30am-3pm.

Diamond Jubilee Beacon lighting, Dewsbury District Golf Club, Sands Lane, Mirfield, 10.15pm.

SATURDAY JUNE 9

Jubilee party with welly wanging, face-painting, ice cream, Coronation teas served by waitresses in 1950s dress, bouncy castle, a display by the Air and Sea Cadets, Batley Music Centre Band, donkey rides, the screening of the Jubilee and children’s entertainers. Dewsbury Minster, Rishworth Road, 11.30am-5pm.

Mirfield Festival of Dance. Morris dancing troupes assemble at Mirfield Showground, 10.30am, then dance to St Paul’s Church, 11am. Performances throughout the day at Mirfield Library in Huddersfield Road, St Paul’s Church in Huddersfield Road, The Airedale Heifer in Stocks Bank Road The Navigation Tavern in Station Road, The Old Colonial in Dunbottle Lane, The Pear Tree Inn in Huddersfield Road, The Ship Inn in Shepley Bridge and Upper Hopton Community Centre in Jackroyd Lane. Final dance-off at St Paul’s Church, 4pm.
