A BAKERY engineer has lost an astounding 5st 7lb a year after starting to diet - despite being surrounded by mouthwatering cream cakes all day!

Brian Wilson, 61, decided to slim down last year after being turned down for a back operation because of his weight.

He was referred to Kirklees Weight Management which offered him different options including three months’ free membership to Weightwatchers.

He joined up and has managed to drop from more than 20st to 15st 7lb.

Brian, of Tichbourne Street, Hightown, said: “This time last year I couldn’t walk.

“I went for an operation and they said they wouldn’t do it because of my weight.

“I thought, ‘This is going to keep happening. I’m going to do something about it’.”

Brian said his weight gain started after he broke his leg playing football in his younger years.

He said: “I put three or four stone on and never got it off.

“I have worked at Watson’s Bakers in Liversedge for 30 years and there is always something to eat!”

Brian joined Weightwatchers, which meets at Heckmondwike RAFA Club, in Darley Street, Heckmondwike, on Wednesdays.

He said: “I thought I might as well go and see what it was all about and I really got into it. I still go to meetings now — I think I would stray back a bit if it I didn’t. I’ve always been a big lad, so everyone says I’ve done fantastic.”
