The show, which was entitled “Stepping Up”, brought together around 80 successful women from across the region to have their achievements recognised at the Lawrence Batley Theatre.

Many of the achievements centred on those triumphing over adversity or engaging in active community work.

Radio Leeds’ Liz Green appeared as a guest speaker and there was also an “on the settee” question-and-answer session with a couple of the women before comedian Shazia Mirza performed a stand-up gig.

Sharron Wilkinson, of Volunteering Kirklees, which organised the event said: “Young and old and from all across Kirklees, women came together and their achievements were celebrated.

“Their stories were truly inspiring, ranging from women who had suffered personal tragedy and had gone on to set up charities and help others, women who had seen an issue in their local neighbourhood such as asylum seekers sleeping on the street, to the many women volunteers who are keeping the organisations that many people rely on afloat.”
