Kids sow seeds for a healthy diet

PUPILS enjoyed a week of extra healthy meal options to mark Grow Your Own week.

Children at Birkenshaw First and Nursery and Ravensthorpe Infant schools were given the option of an extra vegetable based dish as part of national Grow Your Own week, which encourages people to grow and cook their own vegetables.

Pupils had one different choice every day of potato and broccoli scone, cauliflower and potato curry, cabbage and carrot salad with yoghurt dressing, beetroot cake and apple and carrot muffin with toffee topping.

Coun Kath Harris, Kirklees Cabinet member for Children and Young People, said: “The aim of the exercise is to help teach children how vegetables are produced and the different ways vegetables grown at home can be eaten. The extra dishes on the menu in March sound delicious and I hope many parents will be encouraged to try and make them at home.”

The event was organised by Kirklees School Catering Service and children took home the recipes of the cabbage and carrot salad and the beetroot cake.
