The Heavy Woollen Planning Sub-Committee met yesterday to discuss the former XTG hair salon in Knowl Road, which applicants want to turn into a wine bar.

The application has met with fierce opposition from both nearby residents and Mirfield Town Council due to its proximity to a day nursery, and the problems people drinking and smoking nearby during the day could bring.

At the meeting, chairman of the committee, Coun Paul Kane, said he thought a decision on whether to grant the change of use should be deferred to find out more information on feedback and a proposed smoking area.

He said: “I am concerned about whether this site had been advertised properly.

“Obviously, if making it into a bar is the last thing that we can do, then fine. But we need more information.”

The group also claimed they had insufficient information on whether or not a smoking area would be included on the site.

The matter was deferred for a future committee date.
