Alison Lowe, a councillor in Armley, Leeds, and Jo Cox, chairwoman of the Labour Women’s Network, hope to be Labour’s chosen candidate to stand in 2015.

In February current MP Mike Wood said he would not seek another term, after serving for 17 years.

Jo Cox, 39, grew up in Batley and went to Heckmondwike Grammar School. She said: “The level of support I’m receiving from across the constituency is humbling. People are saying they want someone who combines local roots and strong national reach and it’s that combination I hope I can bring. I’m looking forward to making my case.”

Alison Lowe, who lives in Birstall, said: “The constituency of Batley and Spen is really special. It deserves a candidate that will work hard to keep it Labour but also honour Mike Wood’s legacy by being a fantastic constituency MP.”

Last month the group said the national executive committee had decided to select its next candidate from an all-female shortlist to improve the gender balance in the party. Both women will put their cases forward to local members on May 10.
