Leaders saved as heavy rain hits

NONE of last Saturday’s Bradford League games were completed as heavy rain saw all matches abandoned.

Just 118 overs were possible of the six scheduled Division One matches.

Champions Woodlands were given a scare by lowly Saltaire when they were reduced to 12-4 early in their innings before struggling to 94-8 in a 28 over-side match.

Second teamer Liam Brearley was promoted to replace overseas all-rounder Sarfraz Ahmed, who has returned to Pakistan following the death of his father, and he made 34, while Yasir Qasim (3-31) was the pick of the Saltaire bowlers.

Saltaire made 19-0 in seven overs when the rain returned to end proceedings and they drew level with Hanging Heaton.

Pudsey Congs declared on 226-6 after 45.4 overs thanks to the efforts of Nick Lindley (40), Edward Walmsley (35no), Eugene Burzler (33) and Basil Akram (32).

John Carruthers picked up 3-76 for Heaton, who would have had just 24 overs to chase the large total before the rain returned to end play.

Cleckheaton and Lightcliffe waited until the deadline to start a game and played a 20 over-a-side contest.

Lightcliffe made 128-6 thanks to a top score of 34 from Matthew Taylor as paceman James Lee took 3-29.

Cleckheaton were making good progress at 47-2 in eight overs when rain denied them chance of victory.

Just two overs of East Bierley’s game at Undercliffe were possible before rain ended play with the visitors 1-0.

Rain washed out all but one of the games in Division Two.

In the only one to start, Hartshead Moor reduced visitors Morley to 28-3 before a 97-run partnership between overseas player Kashif Naveed and captain Matt Baxter.

Baxter hit three sixes and four fours in an unbeaten 70, while Naveed’s 59 contained seven fours as Morley reached 176-5 in 30 overs. George Saville (3-60) was Hartshead’s most successful bowler.

Hartshead were 62-2 after 12 overs when play was abandoned but the nine points Morley collect saw them close the gap on second placed Yeadon, while they also have a game in hand.
