A charity which offers grants to young people to study foreign languages is holding an open day this week.

Norman Barnett Languages Trust, based at Disken and Co Solicitors in Dewsbury, promotes the study of foreign languages by young people and offers grants and awards every year.

The trust has been running for 15 years and it has given out more than 200 grants to local young people and schools to study a variety of foreign languages including French, German, Spanish, Russian, Italian and Japanese.

It was established by Norman Barnett, a well-known Dewsbury market trader.

There will be an open afternoon at Cloggs Coffee Shop, Tithe Barn Street, Dewsbury from 3.45pm to 5pm on Thursday, November 20 for teachers, students and parents to find out more about the trust and how to apply.

Paul Ellis, chairman of the trust, said: “We are looking forward to reading the applications and seeing how the young people of the area are embracing the study of languages.

“It is wonderful to have this opportunity to give local students a helping hand with this important area of their education.

Applicants must be residents within a five-mile radius of Dewsbury Town Hall and be 24-years-old or younger.

The closing date for applications is January 30, 2015.
