ATHLETES from Spen got the chance to get their hands on an Olympic torch when they took part in a Spartan Sprint.
Christopher Furness and Chloe Roberts from Gomersal attended the event with Rebecca Kane – a world champion martial artist and British champion Irish Dancer.
Rebecca, who runs the Kane Academy gym in Huddersfield, was a torch bearer during its Huddersfield to Halifax leg and when she entered a team from her academy for the Spartan Race she took her Olympic torch. Competitors in the 5km military boot camp style run, at a military base in Ripon, tackled 20 obstacles including crawling through clay, under barbed wire, climbing ropes and carrying heavy sacks up and down hills.
Rebecca opened the competitive sprint wielding her Olympic torch for the event’s official video. She then went back to the start line with Christopher and Chloe who train in Filipino martial arts and take part in Spartan fitness sessions at her gym.
