Despite inclement weather for the first Mirfield Music Festival last year, organiser Donal O’Driscoll feels the event was an overall success, and wants to get the public involved in the planning for this year’s event.

Plans to extend the festival over two days – June 20 and 21 – and have only one stage were put forward by Mr O’Driscoll during a meeting of Mirfield Town Council on Tuesday.

He said: “Last year we had a lot more challenges than we expected, but the feedback we got was really encouraging.”

He explained that, after holding a meeting to ask members of the public for their opinions, this year’s festival would have more of a “country fair” feel.

“We will not be using any heavy machinery,” he added. “The public said they wanted it to have less impact on the ground, so we will be taking steps to do this.”

He said he had already managed to get £600 in crowd funding for the festival.

Mr O’Driscoll also confirmed he planned to have live music until 10pm on the Sunday – a suggestion that did not sit well with some town councillors.

Coun Kath Taylor said: “One of the main concerns, I feel, is that two days is just too much – it would be much better if you only had one day like last year.

“I would be pretty miffed if I were a resident living round there, and would have to go away for the weekend.

“I just think it is in the wrong place.”
