M1 motorway to be closed due to £120m traffic busting works

Sections of the M1 motorway near Wakefield will be closed overnight as works to upgrade it to a ‘managed motorway’ continue.

The Highways Agency is carrying out works to upgrade the stretch of road between junction 39 at Durkar and junction 42 at Lofthouse in a bid to ease congestion.

As part of the works the northbound carriageway will be closed between junction 39 at Durkar and junction 40 at Ossett overnight on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The southbound carriageway between junction 42 at Lofthouse and junction 41 at Carr Gate will also be closed overnight on Saturday and Sunday.

Closures will be in place from 8pm until 6am each night.

Clearly signed diversions will be in place.

The scheme, which is due to be completed by September next year, will see hard shoulders become permanent lanes during peak times.
