AFTER almost a year the Whitechapel Road motorway bridge will reopen on Wednesday – restoring the road link between Cleckheaton and Scholes village.
The old bridge was removed last year amid concerns over asbestos and a new bridge has been built in its place.
The Highways Agency hopes that the work will mean further maintenance will not be needed in the future.
The stretch of Whitechapel Road has been closed since August as the work was carried out.
Diversion routes have been in place since the closure, with a Whitcliffe and Scholes shuttle bus service proving the only way for people using public transport to cross the divide.
There will be an opening ceremony on Wednesday at 11am with children from local schools, as well as church members from St Philip’s Church, in Scholes, and Whitechapel Church, in Cleckheaton, joining together for a service led by the Rev Brunel James.
