M62 motorway closed on Saturday night

THE M62 motorway is to be closed overnight this weekend while construction work takes place.

The motorway will be closed from 8pm tomorrow (Saturday) to 8am on Sunday from junction 27 at Gildersome to j28 at Tingley in both directions while works take place.

The work forms part of the construction of the £150m managed motorway scheme which aims to cut congestion, make journey times more reliable and improve safety through the use of variable speed limits and by opening the hard shoulder as an extra running lane.

The work being done this weekend is to install overhead gantries. A clearly signed diversion route will operate via the A650.

Further weekend overnight closures will be required on various sections of the M62 between junctions 25 (Brighouse) to 30 (Rothwell) until November, but will not be every weekend.

David Pilsworth, Highways Agency project manager, said: ‘Using overnight closures gives us full access to the motorway and means we can install the gantries, signs and signals as quickly and efficiently as possible. Closing the M62 also ensures the safety of the travelling public as the road workers will be working overhead and will be working with large and heavy equipment. Although the closures will be in place at weekends when there is less traffic on the M62, we do advise road users to allow more time for their journeys and to follow the clearly signed diversion route, which will be via the A650.”
