Man admits killing Jack

Mohammed Nazakat Alam, 24, pleaded guilty to the charge of manslaughter at Leeds Crown Court on Friday December 9th.

Co-accused Nisar Shah, 40, denied manslaughter but admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm for his part in the attack on 39-year-old Jack Carter in August.

Mr Carter, of Bretton Street, Savile Town, was attacked in Victoria Road, Thornhill Lees and died of his injuries in hospital three days later.

Alam, of Beckett Lane, Dewsbury Moor, was remanded in custody and told he would be given a prison sentence.

The Recorder of Leeds, Judge Peter Collier QC, told him: “In your case, the sentence will inevitably be a custodial one.”

Shah, formerly of Victoria Road, was granted bail but Judge Collier QC told him: “You should not read into the fact that you are being given bail that your sentence will not be a custodial one.”

In court, the public gallery was filled with people interested in the case.

Both defendants were originally charged with murder, but the pleas to charges of assault and manslaughter were accepted by the prosecution.

Mr Carter suffered serious head injuries when he was attacked in Victoria Road as he was leaving a friend’s house at around 6.45pm on Sunday August 28.

He was taken to Dewsbury and District Hospital and was in a critical condition until he died on Wednesday August 31.

Shah then appeared at Batley and Dewsbury Magistrates’ Court the following Thursday morning, but did not plead to any charge until last Friday. Alam had also not pleaded to any charge before last Friday.

Both Alam and Shah will be sentenced at Leeds Crown Court on Thursday January 5.

Two others were also arrested in relation to the attack on Mr Carter, but were released without being charged.
