Man banned from Dewsbury bus station for shouting and swearing

Basharat Wali’s Asbo also bans him from contacting the relatives of his ex-partner for a minimum of two years.

Kirklees Magistrates’ Court heard staff at the bus station had previously tried to ban Wali, of Hawthorne Avenue in Staincliffe, for his repeated drunken behaviour, domestic arguments and verbal abuse.

Prosecuting on Friday, Clare Benson said staff also complained about Wali, 32, spitting on the floor and drinking alcohol inside the station.

The application for a bolt-on Asbo was granted as magistrates sentenced Wali for using threatening words or behaviour to cause harassment, alarm or distress and for obstructing a police constable, which he pleaded guilty to at earlier court hearings.

He was also sentenced for breaching a conditional discharge imposed on him last year for possessing heroin.

Miss Benson said Wali shouted and swore at the mother and sister of his ex-girlfriend – the mother of his child – at Dewsbury Bus Station on November 11 last year.

On March 15 this year Wali was seen shouting and swearing at Asda in Dewsbury and acting erratically. He later went to Dewsbury Police Station of his own accord where he continued shouting and swearing, and began ‘thrashing around and snarling’ when officers told him he was under arrest for breaching the peace.

Mitigating, Paul Blanchard said Wali had rid himself of a heroin addiction he had for ‘a significant period of time’ that was the ‘blight of his life’.

“He did himself no favours on March 15,” he said.

“He was heavily intoxicated and did something he does not even remember. It was ridiculous for him to walk into a police station and behave as he did, but he did.”

As a direct alternative to prison, magistrates gave Wali an 18-month community order with an attendance activity and a three month curfew. He was ordered to pay £150 towards court costs.
