Laura Fletcher, from Gomersal, raised £2,318 for the meningitis research foundation after completing the London Marathon on Sunday.

“Thank god that’s over!” she said. “It went really well though – it was my first one, and I had a five-hour target, and I completed it in four hours, 58 seconds!”

She added that, although she kept some energy in reserve, the 26-mile race began to take its toll half way through.

“It got really difficult around the 14-mile mark, she added. “I think it’s because you have run such a long way, but you know you have a long way to go.

“But I was so elated when I finished it!”

Laura ran the marathon to raise awareness of the disease her daughter, Ruby, survived in December 2011, at the age of 13 months.

Laura said: “My daughter spent seven days in an intensive care unit and was discharged having made an excellent recovery.

“Her illness had, and continues to have, a profound impact. It is only since Ruby began to recover that I was able to research into the illness and hence discover just how lucky she was.”
