Mirfield volunteers prepare for African adventure

And they are asking Reporter readers to root through their garages and sheds for any unwanted tools.

A team of 18 volunteers will travel to the island of Ukerewe in November.

They have booked a container to ship tools of any kind.

Organiser Dr John Philip said: “We are appealing to the good people here, please check your garages, stores and tool boxes.

“I would appreciate any tools – so long as they are in good condition, they can make a difference to people in Ukerewe.

“I would also like any building tools, stepladders, trowels, tile cutters, shovels – in fact almost anything.

“By giving tools we are helping them to help themselves.’

The island’s 350 inhabitants, who must travel by ferry for three-and-a-half hours to reach the mainland, earn less than £1 a day on average by farming and fishing.

Three years ago, Mirfield Rotary Club set up a small credit programme in Ukerewe which is helping 18 families. They also refurbished the local hospital operating theatre, provided a waiting hostel for pregnant women, supplied educational materials to several schools, improved water supply and built a playground.
