CLECKHEATON might now be world-renowned for its folk festivals, but back in 1970 the town made the local headlines for a pop festival.
Four hundred people packed into the town hall for Mr Mayor’s Midnight Musical Marathon which began at 9pm and ended at 4am.
The first part of the event was a professional disco provided by Sound City Disco and a cabaret by Kindness, a group from Radio One. After midnight the tempo changed and there was live music from international blue singer Jack Dupree plus Isengard and Xrystalized Anthem from Bradford and Cleckheaton semi-professionals Grotesque Gnome - all played through a haze of joss sticks and flashing psychedelic lighting.
The event was in aid of the Mayor of Spenborough’s charity, the Childbirth Research Appeal.
