MP backs Euro exit

He is in favour of clawing back power from Brussells – but added that his constituency would not suffer if the country voted in favour of exiting the EU altogether.

It comes in a week of Tory wrangling over the issue of the UK’s future in Europe.

Mr Reevell said the public are entitled to a vote on the issue, but added that we need not fear life outside the EU.

He said: “Dewsbury business could still trade with confidence. We don’t need someone telling us how big our road signs should be and how long our doctors should be working.

“It wouldn’t adversely affect trade as we will increasingly be trading with countries like Brazil and India.”

Mr Reevell said the EU should return to its roots as a trading block, leaving Britain to govern more of its own affairs internally.

He added: “There will always need to be minimal regulation for trading but that’s different to having a political body telling us what to do on law and order and the environment – things we are perfectly capable of dealing with ourselves.”

But Mr Reevell was not one of more than 100 Tory MP’s who this week expressed ‘regret’ that a bill paving the way for a referendum is not being brought forward this year.

He said the move was unnecessary as David Cameron had gone ‘as far as he can’ to show that he is committed to a referendum if the Conservatives win an outright majority in 2017.
