Spen MP Mike Wood congratulated pupils on their achievements when he was guest speaker at Spen Valley Sports College’s awards evening. He presented a range of prizes including subject and attendance awards. The students of the year were: Lily Wood and Luke March (year seven); Elliott Campbell and Eden Stocks (year eight); and Liam Eastwood and Tiffany Stead (year nine).
The newly appointed deputy head prefects Erin Newsome and Tom Crossland, and head prefects Melissa Powell and Conor Leadbeater were also announced. The sports personality of the year was presented to Erin Newsome in recognition for her contribution to athletics and as an excellent role model to her fellow students.
Mr Wood encouraged the pupils to use their current successes to springboard onto great things. He recognised Spen Valley as being a ‘Good’ school and a great place for students to learn.
The evening also included several performances, among them the school’s ukulele band, The Troubadours, which has recently been involved in the National Music for Youth Festival in Birmingham, and Niamh Stacey who performed a piece she had written and composed herself which Olivia Turpin and Alyssia Turpin danced to.
