Doncaster-based Strata Homes Limited put in a planning application to create houses and roads on urban green space behind New Lane and Pearson Street, Moorside, on September 26.

Graeme Raisbeck, who lives in New Lane, said: “We are the most important people in this and we say no.

“It is some of the last remaining urban green space in Cleckheaton. It is full of wildlife.”

Cleckheaton councillor Baroness Kath Pinnock said: “For a developer to come along with plans is outrageous. If this land is lost, then there will be green belt applications across Kirklees.”

A separate application has been made by Atkin Enterprises, of Bradford, to build 34 homes and 78 parking spaces at land off Croft Street in Birkenshaw.
