New Mirfield supermarket to create 200 jobs

The application, by St James Securities, is to build a new purpose-built supermarket on the former Veolia works on Station Road, creating 200 jobs.

The firm has so far refused to confirm which supermarket chain wants to occupy the site, but has said it is one of the ‘big four’.

The store will also create new opportunities for residents to do a full weekly shop in Mirfield and reduce the need to travel to larger supermarkets in other towns.

By keeping trade in Mirfield, the proposal will provide an anchor for the town centre and generate wider benefits for the whole community, as well as creating up to 200 new local jobs at the store itself.

Speaking after the submission, Oliver Quarmby, Managing Director of St James Securities, said: “The council’s own figures show just 12.4 per cent of Mirfield residents currently do their main weekly food shopping in the town. Our proposal will help claw back the £32m trade lost from Mirfield each year and cut unnecessary car journeys to Dewsbury, Huddersfield and elsewhere.

“I would like to thank everybody who came to our recent public exhibition and gave us their comments. Submitting the application marks the next key milestone for the project, but does not mean the end of community engagement.

“We have received a large volume of useful feedback already, which we will analyse and consider as the plans evolve, and we remain committed to further discussions with the local community as the application progresses through the planning process.”
