A Mirfield man has avoided jail after attacking a driver in a drunken rage on New Years Eve.

Gavin Proctor, of Johnson Street, punched Andrew Haigh in the face three times outside the Lonsdale Hotel in Halifax Road, Liversedge in the early hours of January 1 this year.

Prosecuting, Andy Wills told the court Mr Haigh had got out of his car to attempt to calm Proctor down when he noticed him having a heated argument with his girlfriend, before he was attacked.

Mr Proctor had pleaded guilty to the offence, but claimed to have no memory of the event due to the amount of alcohol he had consumed.

Mitigating, Emily Price told the court that Proctor deeply regretted his actions and had just secured full-time employment.

She said: “To say he regrets his actions would be an understatement

Magistrate Mr Gledhill gave Proctor a 12-month community order and ordered him to pay Mr Haigh £250 compensation.

Mr Gledhill warned: “You can’t carry on beating people up and assaulting them. If you carry on like this, you will eventually be in prison.”
