And Coun Gwen Lowe (Lab, Batley West) said the response from the public had been brilliant.

She said: “It has been an absolutely fantastic response.

“Someone stopped me in a local park the other week because they were interested.

“Just from the coverage in the Batley and Birstall News the first week we got a big response.”

And she said the Facebook group was a great way for people to discuss ideas and plan action for the station.

“In this modern day it is a good way of communicating with people out there.

She said that improvements to the station were something residents and rail users had wanted for a long time.

“Before we felt our asking was falling on deaf ears but now were are making a bit more noise,” she said.

And the group is holding a meeting at the station with Peter Myers, client and stakeholder manager for Northern Rail, on Tuesday October 28, at 3.30pm.

Northern Rail maintains the station and the group wants to work alongside it.

The cleanup campaign was set up recently by Coun Lowe, with Coun Amanda Stubley (Lab, Batley East), the Labour party’s parliamentary candidate for Batley and Spen, Jo Cox, and the town’s residents.

They said improving the station would benefit business and the economy of the town.
