Supermarket giant Sainsbury’s has early plans to open a new store in Gomersal.

The company confirmed this week that it hopes to convert the White Horse pub in Oxford Road.

Rumours had been rife in the village that Tesco wanted to reopen the recently-closed pub as a supermarket, but a company spokesman denied any involvement.

However this week Sainsbury’s confirmed its interest.

“As for how the timing of it goes, it is really in the hands of the planning process and we’ll wait until consents are in place, or at least in sight, before beginning to think through an opening schedule,” said a spokesman.

A plan is yet to be submitted to officers at Kirklees Council’s planning department.

The pub is situated just yards from a Co-operative Food, also in Oxford Road.
