One man dead after two crashes in Batley

The crash happened at the junction of Taylor Street and Victoria Avenue in Batley, near the Fox’s Biscuits factory, just before 10pm last night (Tuesday).

The front seat passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.

West Yorkshire Police said a 21-year-old male driver and another male passenger, 18, were taken to Leeds General Infirmary with serious, but not life-threatening, injuries.

It is thought all three men were trapped after the tree smashed into a passenger side door.

Fire crews from Dewsbury and Batley rushed to the scene, where they helped paramedics and removed doors to allow access.

Sergeant Carl Quinn, from West Yorkshire Police’s Major Collision Investigation Unit, said: “No other vehicles are believed to have been involved in the collision and we are appealing for any witnesses to the manner in which the Nissan Micra was being driven prior to the collision.”

The car had been reported stolen from the Batley area on September 9.

Just minutes later, in a totally separate incident, a 35-year-old woman was struck by a car in Purwell Lane. She was in the road when it happened, said West Yorkshire Police.

She was taken to Pinderfields General Hospital with injuries which are not life threatening.

Police are appealing for witnesses, who should call the Western Roads Policing Unit on 101.
