It’s the end of an era

The retirement of Coun Karam Hussain marks the end of an era in Dewsbury West.

Karam was the first Liberal Democrat to represent the ward. He worked tirelessly to win the seat in 1998 and has worked tirelessly since then.

He has attracted support from all sections of the community,

His achievements have included

l Bringing Dewsbury Museum back to Crow Nest Park;

l A new library and health centre in Ravensthorpe;

lEstate improvements in Dewsbury Moor;

l A new community centre in Ravensthorpe, and;

l CCTV cameras in Dewsbury Cemetery.

Karam served as both Mayor of Kirklees and chairman of the West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Authority.

He will be missed for his enthusiasm, his persistence and his ability to relate people of all ages and backgrounds.

Karam will be a hard act to follow but I am pleased that the Liberal Democrats have chosen a worthy successor in Waheed Anwar.

Waheed is a community campaigner in the same mould as Karam and will build on his many years of good work.
