Parent support charity Auntie Pam’s bid for national award

A local charity which helps new parents through the challenges of childcare has been nominated for a national award.

Auntie Pam’s, which began in Dewsbury and now operates across Kirklees, offers drop-in support for mums and dads dealing with issues including pregnancy, child development, health, housing and relationship problems. The organisation has been shortlisted for the Local Government Chronicle Community Involvement award, which recognises projects that enable local people to volunteer to help others, Auntie Pam’s trains local mums as peer mentors, who can then offer a listening ear. Many of the 250 volunteers have since gone on to complete further education courses or returned to work. The Auntie Pam’s team will now travel to London in January to convince judges that they should win, before a final award ceremony in March.

“To be shortlisted is an amazing achievement. The service couldn’t run without the commitment of the peer supporters so they deserve recognition for this achievement just as much as public health team,” said Coun Viv Kendrick.
