COULD this be the oldest cat in Spen? Smudgie the black and white moggy is 19 years old.

Experts say the first two years of a cat’s life are roughly equal to the first 25 of a human’s, and then each year after that is about four cat years.

That makes Smudgie 92 years old.

Her owner Angela Addinall wrote in to the Guardian after reading our recent story about Jack Russell Sam, who is 20 years old.

She said: “I have had Smudgie since she was a kitten. I got her from a cattery for £5 in 1992. I was told that she was born in August of that year.

“When I took her to the vets a couple of years ago the vet said that cats round this area only live between 16 and 18, so she is doing well.

“Apart from being a bit arthritic, a cataract in one eye and being a bit deaf she is still going strong.

“People can’t believe she is 19 as she has a lovely glossy coat and still looks quite young.”
