Artist creates eco-themed display in Dewsbury town centre

WOVEN is a biennial festival which is funded by Kirklees Council and celebrates innovation in textiles across Kirklees.

Andrew Warburton's commission is entitled “Sculpting A Continent”.

It is intended to start a conversation about climate change and how a small change by everyone could lessen our impact on the environment.

The commission will be located in a seated gazebo in Market Place, Dewsbury and will be on display every Saturday throughout the WOVEN in Kirklees festival.

There will also be lots of opportunities for local people to have a go at hand tufting and contribute to the installation by making tufted lines in a stretched rug canvas.

Every Saturday in June, Andrew will be hosting hand tufting workshops in the Arcade Shop in Market Place from 10am until noon and from 1pm to 3pm. All sessions must be pre-booked.

Andrew has been designing and making hand tufted rugs for domestic, commercial and commissioned floor or wall artwork for more than 30 years.

Living in Dewsbury, with a rug making workshop in Mirfield, Andrew uses locally sourced wool spinners, yarn dyers and suppliers to create one-off rugs and carpets.
