Cheers all round as 50 pubs in Dewsbury, Batley, Mirfield and Spen open outdoors

Beer fans have been enjoying a pint at pubs in the district for the first time in several months, following the latest step in the lockdown easing.

Many pubs in Dewsbury, Batley Mirfield and the Spen Valley were delighted to welcome customers back to their beer gardens and outdoor space after hospitality businesses were allowed to re-open and serve people outdoors from Monday, April 12.

Mike Roebuck, chairman of the Heavy Woollen branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), said: “As CAMRA members, we are very happy to see our pubs and clubs re-opening, even if it is a case of drinking outdoors initially and having to check in (ideally via the Test and Trace app) before ordering.

“If the Government sticks to its roadmap, we should be able to drink inside again from May 17 onwards, too.

"The hospitality industry has been hit very hard by lockdown and I’m sorry to say that some pubs won’t re-open, although I’m not personally aware of any such in our branch area (North Kirklees). Opening hours vary from venue to venue. Make sure you check them before setting off.

“Earlier this month, CAMRA teamed up with the Society of Independent Brewers, the British Institute of Innkeeping and Cask Marque in a rallying call for people to choose cask as their first beer back – it is so important for small brewers (who sell most of their beer in pubs), for wet-led pubs that have suffered months of restrictions and for us as CAMRA members, as a lot of us have not been able to enjoy cask beer during lockdown.

"We are looking forward to seeing photos of fresh pints of cask beer, cider and perry, and people enjoying the social and well-being benefits of going to pubs and social clubs. And remember - don’t drink and drive.”
