Many establishments have been serving customers in their outside space since April 12 as part of step two on the roadmap, which allows hospitality businesses to operate outdoors.

From Monday, May 17, the Government is giving the green light for pubs, bars, cafes and restaurants to serve customers indoors - news which will allow businesses without any outdoor space to finally re-open.

Mike Roebuck, chairman of the Heavy Woollen District branch of CAMRA (the Campaign for Real Ale), said: “Here at CAMRA, we were very much looking forward to pub beer gardens re-opening, so it’s a shame that the weather hasn’t really played along.

“The cold has proved to be a bigger problem than the normal April rain, but it’s clear that some pubs have been trading well despite this and we have been able to drink lovely cask beer again outside most of our local pubs.

“The innovative and expanded beer gardens at some pubs are really impressive, too.

“Things are about to change again and we are expecting to be able to drink inside pubs again from May 17.

“Even if we are still restricted to table service, being able to return to drinking in a warm and cosy environment is something we’re really looking forward to.

“If the Government sticks to its roadmap, things should be back to normal on June 21 and that’s the day when we’ll be able to use pubs normally, with no restrictions.”
