Inspiring women

The awards were hosted by Kirklees Women’s Alliance and were part of a KWA conference held at Dewsbury Town Hall, attended by more than 150 people, to mark International Women’s Day.

Carer award winner was Neelam Hussain, a pupil at Batley Girls’ High School, where she is lead student for achievement. Her ambition is to raise the profile and aspirations of students lacking confidence and belief in their own abilities.

Neelam is also a key member of the school’s student leadership team and student council.

Dewsbury businesswoman Trish Makepeace received the businesswoman award. She is president of Dewsbury Chamber of Trade, chairwoman of Dewsbury Market Traders’ Association and a member of the Town Team and Dewsbury Rotary Club, of which she has twice been president. She has also raised thousands of pounds for local charities.

Trish is passionate about Dewsbury and is currently campaigning for free parking in the town to attract more visitors.

Fakhara Rehman’s contribution to the wellbeing and development of Kirklees communities in her role as co-ordinator at Kirklees Faiths Forums meant she received the service to the family and community award.

Fakhara, who lives in Dewsbury, described herself as a ‘mum, a proud Yorkshirewoman and Muslim’. She is passionate about working to build bridges within the community. “I want to make Dewsbury a better place for my son to grow up in,” she said.

Retired headteacher Joyce Worsfold, of Emily Moor, received the personal achievement award, and the young women award was presented to Suzannah Riley, of Colne Valley.
