ISG Retail has previously built warehouses for retail giant Amazon in Bristol, Darlington and Kent, fuelling speculation that the internet powerhouse is heading for Cleckheaton.

Consultation documents being delivered to homes in the area reveal the size and scale of the development.

The proposed warehouse will be 317 metres long, 178 metres wide and 23 metres tall. It would have a ground floor and three-and-a-half upper floors, taking the total warehouse space to 265,600 sq metres.

The document says: “A storage and warehouse facility of this type and size would create employment for in the region of 1,500 staff.

“The facility would create a wide range of job opportunities across a number of professions such as engineering, IT professionals, robotics, general management, HR and team members to manage customer orders.

“Catering and support staff, cleaners, landscape gardeners and security personnel would also be required.

“In addition, at least 800 jobs would be created during the construction and fit out stages of the project.

“In line with Kirklees Council’s stated objective of creating significant local job opportunities in the next decade, there would be a precedent to recruit from the local area.”

The warehouse would need HGV access and parking and there would be a “partially-decked” car park and on-site bus interchange.

While the surroundings would be landscaped a public footpath, part of the Spen Valley Heritage Trail, would be diverted and a new pedestrian and cycle route created.

A full planning application is expected in June with full technical reports and assessments.
