Plush new look for ‘rubber tunnel’

CLECKHEATON’S ‘rubber tunnel’ is to get the red carpet treatment for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Central Arcade has held on to its nickname, despite the old rubber tiles being replaced by a more modern, cleaner surface by owners Tavirno four years ago.

Now director Stefan Simmonds has decided to lay down red carpet – donated by a local firm – in honour of the royal occasion.

“We were inspired by a visit to the Burlington Arcade in London, linking Oxford Street and Regent Street, which is laid with red carpet,” he said. “It was a bit of a joke at first, but then we thought, why not?”

Carpet fitter Paul Oates gave up his free time to lay it, and Stefan has a cardboard cut-out of the Queen and Prince Philip which people can have their pictures taken with.

This weekend sweets and lollies will be given to shoppers, and the carpet will remain for a few weeks.
