Batley and Spen MP Tracy Brabin has given her full support for library initiatives and is encouraging residents to make full use of them.

With access to library resources being impacted significantly by the Covid-19 lockdown, many people, particularly those without access to technology, have missed out, and with the easing of restrictions, services are resuming, and Tracy Brabin is encouraging residents to pop by their library.

She said: "As a child, libraries were a vital part of my education.

"They gave me the knowledge and confidence to believe I could have a career in the arts and I know many people have similar stories, which is why I’ve always fought to keep local libraries funded and open.

"With lockdown having a serious impact on library services that have already faced a decade of cuts, community initiatives such as the Home Library Service and Bookshelf are vital in giving people access to books and other resources.

"I encourage everyone to make full use of these initiatives so no one misses out on access to our wonderful library services.”

The Royal Voluntary Service have been working with Kirklees Council to restart the Home Library Service.

"While the service has continued online through lockdown, since June 22 books are again being delivered to residents who are otherwise unable to visit their local libraries."

Other community initiatives are complimenting this work, such as Bookshelf run by Upper Batley High School. Following a four-week donation drive, they have been able to begin delivering books and resources to young people in the local community as well as opening their brilliant, colourful Bookshelf to students and local residents.

Ms Brabin visited the opening of this initiative to offer them her full support.
