£20m M62 upgrade scheme gets underway

Work on a £20m scheme designed to ease congestion on the M62 got underway this week.

The scheme – expected to take until the end of the year to complete – aims to relieve congestion.

It is part of the government’s £317m national ‘pinch point’ programme and will include new CCTV cameras and automatic traffic monitoring between junction 30 at Rothwell and junction 32 at Pontefract.

Data will then be sent to the Highways Agency’s regional control centre in Wakefield, which will be able to apply temporary speed limits.

Highways Agency assistant project manager Thomas Howard said: “The new technology will relieve congestion and improve safety on this busy section of motorway whilst providing drivers with more information.”
