Pub games league calls for new players

The Three Valleys Ladies’ Darts and Dominoes League had more than 20 teams representing pubs and social clubs in its heyday 35 years ago, but now only five remain in its traditional Spen heartland.

Now committee members are hoping to widen its scope to women of all ages from Batley, Dewsbury and Mirfield who want to join the fun competition.

Eight-member teams play weekly matches in the host venue, competing for prizes while having fun in a social environment.

“I’ve been involved for 23 years and we have lost a lot of teams because of pub closures and the recession - people think they can’t afford it but it is a cheap night out,” said league treasurer Helen Elliston.

“We have all the generations playing together, a few youngsters who play with their mums and grandmas. There might be some individual ladies willing to join but who don’t have a team, in which case we might be able to match them with other players to form a team.”

Players range in age from 18 to 83 and there is a mix of abilities, with no experience necessary to take part.

“It’s nice to win but it’s always a good laugh and a chance to get out of the house,” added Helen.

Rival teams also get together every year to host a pentathlon night to raise money for charity, playing a round robin format.

“We want to open it up to more people outside of the Three Valleys area, so we’re hoping ladies from Dewsbury and Mirfield might want to play. Membership fees aren’t high but there is the possibility of a discount for new members.”
