Public meeting called about threat to Dewsbury A&E

DEFENDING services at Dewsbury and District Hospital will be the focus of a public meeting next week.

Dewsbury Socialist Party hopes to bring together everyone concerned about the threat to services, including the potential downgrading of Dewsbury’s A&E department.

Organiser Paul Wheelhouse said: “This proposal will leave literally thousands to fend for themselves and will have a direct impact on their life chances.”

He said the aim was to organise a community-based campaign group to challenge hospital bosses.

“We do not accept this proposal but realise this will be a massive fight if it is to be defeated,” he said. “We are appealing to everyone to come along. If you want to save Dewsbury A&E, don’t leave it to someone else; this is your fight.”

The meeting is at Dewsbury Town Hall on Wednesday, 7.30pm.

The main speakers will be Unison’s Mid Yorkshire Health branch chairman Adrian O’Malley and Dr Jackie Grunsell, who was part of a campaign to protect Huddersfield services and was elected to Kirklees Council as a member of Save Huddersfield NHS.
