Pupils get into character to celebrate World Book Day

Batley Girl’s High School saw its pupils and even the staff dress as popular comic book and fictional characters to celebrate the national event.

They were photographed against a green screen to emulate action shots of their favourite characters.

English teachers Adam Thorpe and Sam Fillingham dressed up as comic book heroes Batman and Robin.

Mr Fillingham said: “We had our photos taken at the green screen and positioned ourselves in the Batmobile. We also took one of us jumping off chairs, which will be photoshopped out to make it look like we were jumping off a building. It was great fun.”

The youngsters were also given a glimpse into the fictional world of adventure and suspense with talks from three storytellers and rapper and poet Donavan Christopher.

Mr Fillingham added: “The event helps brings the books to life for the children. It was really good fun and they enjoyed getting off the standard time table and taking part in lots of different events around the school.”

Pupils at Dale House School, in Carlinghow, also joined in the fun hosting their own nursery rhyme and poetry day. The youngsters recited a poem of their choice to their class mates and dressed in a variety of costumes.

World Book Day – on Thursday March 6 – is the biggest annual celebration of books and reading for children to help raise the profile of reading.
